Category: Apocalyptic Figure · Origin: Book of Revelation, Thelemic Mysticism
The Mother of Babylon is the apocalyptic figure of Revelation 17, a woman arrayed in scarlet and purple seated upon a seven-headed beast, named 'Mystery, Babylon the Great, the Mother of Harlots and Abominations of the Earth.' In orthodox Christianity she personifies worldly corruption and idolatry destined for judgement; in Thelema and the left-hand path she is reclaimed as Babalon, the Scarlet Woman, sacred goddess of liberated desire, ecstasy, and the union of opposites poured from her golden cup.
