History & Lore

Dantalion (also Dantalian) is the seventy-first spirit of the Goetia and one of the most sought-after demons in modern practice, particularly for his extraordinary mental and psychological powers. Holding the rank of Duke, he commands thirty-six legions of spirits. The 'Lemegeton' provides a striking visual description: Dantalion appears with many faces—all the faces of men and women—and holds a book in his right hand. This multi-faced appearance symbolizes his ability to understand all human perspectives, thoughts, and minds simultaneously. The book he carries likely represents the sum of human knowledge and the record of all thoughts. Dantalion's most celebrated power is his ability to know the thoughts of all people, men and women alike, and to reveal these thoughts to the practitioner. More remarkably, the grimoires state that he can change thoughts and perceptions at will—literally rewriting how people think and feel. He teaches all arts and sciences instantly and perfectly, declares all secret counsels (revealing hidden plans, conspiracies, and private intentions), and can cause love by altering how someone thinks about another person. This combination of mind-reading and thought-manipulation makes Dantalion perhaps the most powerful spirit for psychological influence, persuasion, and understanding human nature. Medieval practitioners invoked Dantalion for uncovering plots, learning what others truly thought, influencing decisions, and gaining comprehensive knowledge. Modern practitioners work with Dantalion extensively for reading people's true intentions, influencing thoughts and perceptions, causing love or attraction through mental influence, learning psychology, uncovering deception, and understanding the contents of people's minds. His power over thought makes him invaluable but also ethically complex, raising questions about free will and consent.
