History & Lore

Stolas (also Stolos, Solas) is the thirty-sixth spirit of the Goetia, holding the rank of Prince and commanding twenty-six legions of spirits. He has become exceptionally popular in modern occult practice, particularly among those interested in astronomy, astrology, and the celestial sciences. The 'Lemegeton' describes Stolas initially appearing as a raven—a bird long associated with prophecy, wisdom, and the acquisition of knowledge in mythology. Ravens were sacred to Apollo and Odin, both gods of knowledge and prophecy. When commanded by the magician, Stolas assumes human form. His primary expertise is teaching astronomy and astrology with extraordinary depth—the knowledge of the stars, planets, their movements, influences, and the mathematical principles underlying celestial mechanics. He reveals the virtues and properties of all herbs and precious stones, making him valuable for both botanical magic and gemstone work. The combination of celestial knowledge (astronomy) and earthly knowledge (herbs and stones) suggests Stolas teaches the principle of correspondence—'as above, so below'—showing how celestial movements affect terrestrial substances. Medieval and Renaissance grimoires particularly valued Stolas for astrological timing of magical operations, understanding planetary hours, and crafting astrological talismans. Modern practitioners work with Stolas for learning astrology, understanding astronomy, timing magical work, herbalism, crystal magic, and understanding cosmic cycles. Reports consistently describe Stolas as patient, educational, and genuinely enthusiastic about teaching, making him ideal for students of the occult sciences.
