History & Lore

Valefor (also Malaphar, Malephar) is the sixth spirit of the Goetia, holding the rank of Duke and commanding ten legions. The 'Lemegeton' describes him appearing as a lion with an ass's head, bellowing loudly—a composite form combining leonine strength with the ass's association with fertility, stubbornness, and base nature. Despite commanding relatively few legions, Valefor possesses valuable abilities. He reveals hidden treasures and knows where serpents and reptiles dwell. The grimoires note that Valefor 'is a good familiar' and will serve the practitioner well, but warn that he tempts those under his influence toward theft and stealing. This dual nature—loyal servant yet tempter to crime—makes Valefor morally complex. Some interpretations suggest he tests the practitioner's ethics while providing opportunities for gain. He is invoked for finding hidden wealth, locating lost treasures, and understanding the nature of temptation.
